Als Titelverteidigerin geht Elena Quirici wiederum mit grossen Erwartungen an den Start. Kommentar WKF-Homepage:
The Female Kumite -68kg category will be one of the most contended competitions in Kocaeli, and Switzerland’s Elena Quirici is one of the top favourites to shine. The Karate 1-Premier League Grand Winner and defending European champion aims at completing back-to-back victories at continental level so to confirm her status of one of the most promising athletes of her generation. The 23 year-old karateka was the only Swiss medallist at Montpellier last year after beating Alisa Buchinger of Austria in the final; the Wado Kai practitioner has captured the attention of the Swiss Karate enthusiasts with her three medals in European Championships and nine medals in Karate 1-Premier League events.
„I hope that the competition will be well organised, and that my hard work will pay off. I also hope that I will be able to enjoy fighting. I am really looking forward to competing at the European championships“, said Quirici.
The quest to glory in the Female Kumite -68kg category will be highly anticipated since in addition to Elena Quirici, defending World champion Alisa Buchinger of Austria, 2014 World champion Alizee Agier of France and current World Championships silver medallist Katrine Pedersen of Denmark among others hope to reach the top of the podium in Kocaeli.

Bis heute gewann die Schweiz 34 EM Einzel- und 11 Team-Medaillen.
Die European Karate Federation wurde 1965, mit der Schweiz, gegründet. Die erste EM fand 1966 in Paris statt. Die Schweiz wurde Vize-Europameister im Team-Kumite Männer. 1967 gewann der Genfer Henri Jordan in London die erste Schweizer Medaille (Bronze). Erster Europameister wurde 1982 Juan Marquez, erste Europameisterin Fanny Clavien 2008.
1978 (Genève) und 2011 (Zürich-Kloten) wurden die Elite-Europameisterschaften in der Schweiz ausgetragen.
