Die Ausbreitung des Corona-Virus trifft nun auch die WKF und damit das Olympia-Qualifikationsturnier von Rabat.
Am Dienstag war bekanntgegeben worden, dass in dem nordafrikanischen Land die erste Infektion mit dem Virus aufgetreten sei. Das Ministerium für Kultur, Jugend und Sport verfügte darauf, dass alle Sport-Veranstaltungen, bis Ende März, an denen Personen aus dem Ausland teilnehmen, abgesagt werden. Ebenfalls werden alle Veranstaltungen untersagt, an denen mehr als 1000 Personen teilnehmen.
Ob die Olympischen Spiele im Juli und August 2020 in Tokio wie geplant stattfinden, ist noch offen – aber das Feuer soll in jedem Fall entzündet werden. Das teilte am Dienstag das Griechische Olympische Komitee in Athen mit – wenn auch mit weniger Teilnehmern, um dem Coronavirus keine Chance zu geben. „Die Zeremonien zur Entzündung des Feuers am 12. März und zur Übergabe der Fackel am 19. März finden wie geplant statt“, hieß es in einer Mitteilung des Komitees.
Durch die weltweit rasche Ausweitung des Coronavirus wird auch die Debatte um eine Verlegung der Olympischen Spiele immer konkreter. Erstmals äußerte sich ein japanisches Regierungsmitglied über Details zu einer möglichen Verschiebung, bis Ende Mai müsse eine Entscheidung getroffen werden. Japans Sportministerin Seiko Hashimoto erklärte, dass für Tokio eine Verlegung der Sommerspiele nur innerhalb des laufenden Jahres möglich sei. Dabei berief sich die Olympia-Ministerin auf vertragliche Vereinbarungen mit dem IOC.

The World Karate Federation regrets to inform that the Karate 1-Premier League event to take place in Rabat (Morocco) from March 13-15 has been cancelled due to recent developments regarding the coronavirus outbreak.
The cancellation of the event has been taken upon the decision of the Moroccan authorities to take extraordinary measures to control the outbreak of Covid-19 in the country. All international sports competitions have been cancelled in Morocco, and the World Karate Federation has just received the communication from the Moroccan government regarding the Karate event to be held in Rabat next week. Due to this unexpected circumstance, the World Karate Federation in coordination with the International Olympic Committee is working through its Olympic Planning Commission and the Executive Committee to find adequate solutions for any eventual adjustments on the Olympic Qualification System. The World Karate Federation expresses its full commitment to continue doing its utmost to provide the best conditions for athletes to compete at the highest level and sincerely regrets the inconveniences created by this unfortunate situation.
